2019 Whole Cat Workshop

MAC & the MSPCA Present the 2019 Whole Cat Workshop:

Achieving Harmony for Birds, Wildlife & Cats

The 2019 Whole Cat Workshop will be focusing on how birds, wildlife and cat organizations can work together in order to be more effective in our efforts to assist all animals. Bob Sallinger, Director of Conservation from the Audubon Society of Portland, Oregon and Karen Kraus, President of the Feral Cat Coalition will headline the day to discuss their decade long partnership focusing on a balance within the Greater Portland area for all species.

Bob is a wildlife ecologist and will share some of the data collection projects that the Portland Audubon has worked on as well as his perspective on the controversial issue. Karen will describe how she and Bob met in the middle to begin to collaborate on a shared mission to develop the “Safe at Home” campaign and their catio tour. Karen will also discuss issues around managed trap, neuter, return and return to field programs and what it is like working in an area that does not have “enough cats”.

This workshop will seek to foster an effective dialogue in Massachusetts with multidisciplinary organizations to create a bridge between wildlife and community cat advocates. Guests will leave the day armed with information and tips for how to negotiate conflicts within their communities and create a more harmonious space for the wildlife, cats and humans living there.

About our Speakers:

Bob Sallinger, Director of Conservation for Portland Audubon, has been with the organization since 1992. His current responsibilities include directing local, regional, and nation conservation policy initiatives, wildlife research initiatives, the Backyard Habitat Certification Program, and Wildlife Care Center. Bob’s passion for conservation was developed early exploring the woods of Massachusetts and later on solo hikes from Mexico to Canada on the Pacific Crest Trail and from Canada to Southern Colorado on the Continental Divide.

Bob has a B.A. in Biology from Reed College and a J.D. from Lewis and Clark Law School. He currently serves on the board of Humane Oregon and as an adjunct professor of law at Lewis and Clark Law School. He lives in Northeast Portland with his wife Elisabeth Neely, three children and an assortment of critters including dogs, cat, goats, pigeons, chickens and a hedgehog.

Karen Krause, Executive Director of the Feral Cat Coalition of Orgeon has been with the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon since 1995, the founding year. She served as a volunteer, board member and became the first paid staff member in 1997. In 2002 she was named Executive Director. In Karen’s tenure, FCCO has grown from spaying/neutering 1,500 cats per year to helping more than 6,000 cats per year today, and overall FCCO has performed more than 96,000 spay/neuter surgeries.

Through her leadership FCCO has developed a decades long partnership with the Audubon Society of Portland to address issues that impact cats and local wildlife, and created and launched the original and very popular Catio Tour in 2013. She has more than twenty five years of management, development and marketing experience for nonprofit animal organizations.

Karen has presented at many local and national meetings and conferences on topics including fundraising, marketing, and how to build and sustain a successful partnership.
